A paternoster elevator of the kind in which parallel endless chains 6 carry a plurality of projecting forked goods-carrying platforms 7, and a number of roller conveyers e.g. 43, 54, 56 at different levels are arranged for delivering goods to or receiving goods from the elevator comprises a goods transfer platform composed of a plurality of deep loops 23, 24, connected by spaced parallel legs 25 disposed in a common plane mounted in bearings 21 on arms 20 keyed to a shaft 16 driven in synchronism with the elevator chains 6 by a chain 17 running round a sprocket 18 and a sprocket 19 keyed to a drive shaft 2. Sprockets 26, 28, keyed to shafts 22, 16 and connected by chains 29, ensure that each transfer platform 23, 24, 25 remains horizontal as it is rotated about the shaft 16. Goods items 31, 31<SP>1</SP>, 31<SP>11</SP> are fed by gravity on a roller conveyer 43 and are held by a stop 45 on rollers 40 which, together with rollers 32 on spaced parallel arms 33 are mounted on a yoke pivoted at 36 by yoke arms 35. When the transfer platform 23, 24, 25 has lifted a goods item 31 off the rollers 32 an eccentric (not shown) pivots the yoke about the pivot 36 to lift the next goods item 31<SP>1</SP> sufficiently to clear the stop 45 so that it can run down on to the rollers 32. The end roller 40 acts as a stop (Fig. 2, not shown) to prevent goods item 31<SP>11</SP> from following the goods item 311 too closely. The transfer platform 23, 24, 25 travels faster than the chains 6 and so overtakes a platform 7 and deposits the goods item 31 on the tines 8 which pass through the loops 23, 24. Transfer from the rollers 32 to the transfer platform 23, 24, 25 is effected similarly. The transfer mechanism may also be used to unload goods from the elevator, Fig. 1 shows two loading and two unloading stations. Roller conveyers 54, 56 are used conventionally to load and unload the elevator at the base.
