Abstract
785,374. Open tray liquid fuel burners. BRITISH THERMOSTAT CO. Ltd. Dec. 23, 1955 [Dec. 29, 1954], No. 37573/54. Class 75(1) In a liquid fuel burner having a vaporizing trough and a pilot or low fire burner an outwardly and upwardly inclined burner pan formed as a peripheral extension of the vaporizing trough serves to heat the trough by conduction, while the pilot burner shields the central portion of the burner pan from the direct radiation of the main burner flame so that under intermediate or high-fire conditions the vaporizing trough temperature is maintained by conduction at a value sufficient only to allow a limited amount of vaporization to take place. Oil is metered through a pipe 1 to a vaporizing trough 2 formed in a dished burner pan 6 and surrounding a sleeve 3 through which primary air flows and is deflected by a burner cone 4 through a perforated member 5. The holes in which are not directly above the trough 2. During pilot or low burning the surface of the pan 6 immediately below the member 5 is heated by radiation from the mixture that burns at the holes in the member 5 and the trough 2 is heated partly by radiation and partly by conduction from the pan 6. Under high or intermediate fire conditions the oil flow to the trough 2 is increased and the combustion is transferred beyond the member 5 into the larger space beyond the burner cone 4. The primary air through the perforations in the member 5 will pass with the vapour from the trough 2 to the larger chamber bounded by a wall 7 provided with holes 8 through which additional primary air is supplied. During high-fire conditions, holes or slots 10 in the wall 7 supply secondary air to the flame which burns partly above and partly below a deflector plate 9. Specification 656,707 is referred to in the Provisional Specification.
