Abstract

785,106. Inserting oversize rubber sleeve between spaced concentric rigid sleeves. UNITED STATES RUBBER CO. Jan. 30, 1956 [April 19, 1955], No. 2891/56. Class 108(3) The invention relates to apparatus for assembling a torsional vibration damper of the kind comprising a resilient annulus 11 interposed between a central hub 12 and an outer inertia ring 13. According to the invention, the apparatus comprises a pair of platens 23, 24 movable relative to each other, means 25, 26, mounted on the platen 23 for supporting the hub 12 and ring 13 in spaced concentric relationship, means 48, 49, mounted on the platen 24 for supporting the. annulus 11 in axial alignment with the hub 12 and ring 13, and means 57 mounted on the platen 24 for applying pressure to force telescopically the annulus 11, hub 12 and ring 13 into assembled relationship in one rapid stroke. As shown, the means for supporting the annulus 11 comprises concentrically spaced plates 48, 49. The plate 48 is supported by bolts 45 rigid with the plate 48 and slidable relative to the platen 24. The plate 48 is downwardly urged from the platen 24 by the action of springs 54 to a limit determined by stops 46 on the rods 45. A similar arrangement is in employed for supporting the plate 49. The pressure applying means comprises an annular steel die 57 rigid with the platen 24 and slidable between, and relative to, the plates 48, 49. At its lower end which is adapted to engage the upper end surface of the annulus 11, the die 57 is formed with bevelled surfaces 61, 62, which at the end of the annulus-inserting stroke come into contact with similarly inclined surfaces formed respectively on the hub 12 and ring 13 (Fig. 3). Before operation of the apparatus, the platen 24 is in a raised position so that the plates 48, 49, and the die 57, are in the position shown in dot and dash lines in Fig. 2. The annulus is placed in position between the plates 48, 49, and beneath the lower end surface of the die 57, as shown. The hub 12 and the ring 13 are placed in position on the means 25, 26 as shown in the main Figure. The platens 23, 24, are then moved towards each other. After the plates 48, 49, engage the ring 13 and hub 12 respectively, the springs 54 compress as the die 57 drives the annulus 11 into position. A lubricant comprises a mixture of 20 per cent petrolatum and 80 per cent light mineral oil may be used. Alignment is preserved by means of a pin 37 rigid with the means 26. There is a degree of clearance between the periphery of the means 26 and the inner periphery of the hub 12. Pins 66 provide for ejection of the vibration damper after assembly is complete. U.S.A. Specifications 1,976,789 and 2,556,999 are referred to.
