Abstract
770,971. Assembling resilient mountings. GENERAL TIRE & RUBBER CO. May 4, 1955 [May 11, 1954], No. 12953/55. Class 108(3). A machine for assembling resilient bushings having a tubular rubber insert A under radial compression between an outer rigid sleeve B and an inner rigid core C comprises a head 8 mounted for linear movements and having a sleeve receiving and supporting socket 25, means 20 for supporting the core C in axial alignment with the socket 25, means for supporting the insert A independently of the sleeve B and the core C, comprising a pressure applying and clamping member 14 having an opening 24 through which the core C may pass, means for advancing the head 8 towards the core supporting means 20, and means operable during the advancing movement of the head 8 for applying thrust to the pressure applying and clamping member 14 to force an insert A into the sleeve B positioned within the socket 25. The core supporting means comprises a plunger 20 mounted adjustably at 21 on a base plate 1. Posts 4, 4, rigid with the base plate 1 support a main pressure cylinder, Fig. 1 (not shown) containing a piston, the rod 7 of which is connected to the head 8. The latter is rigid with a cross head 9 guided for vertical movement by posts 11, 11, rigid with the base plate 1. The pressure applying and clamping member 14 comprises a cross head 14 also slidable with respect to the posts 11, 11, and suspended from pistons 13, 13, working in pneumatic cylinders 12, 12, rigid with the cross head 9. The top of the main cylinder is connected by fluid pressure piping to the bottom of each of the cylinders 12, 12. The bottom of the main cylinder is similarly connected to the top ends of the cylinders 12, 12. Fluid pressure is normally applied via a valve, Fig. 5 (not shown) to the upper end of the main cylinder. Energization of a solenoid causes the valve to be reversed to apply pressure to the lower end of the main cylinder and to the upper end of the cylinders 12, 12. The solenoid is energized by the operation of a pair of switches connected in series and mounted respectively on the posts 4, 4. In operation, the pressure connections are such that the cross head 9 is at the top of its travel and the cross head 14 is spaced at its maximum distance from the cross head 9, Fig. 1 (not shown). A core C and pilot 29 are placed in position on the plunger 20. An insert A is placed in position in a socket 23 on the cross head 14. A sleeve B is placed in position in the socket 25, being retained by a ball catch 26, Fig. 2. On operation of the switches on the posts 4, 4, pressure is reversed in the three cylinders. This causes the cross head 14 to be raised relative to the cross head 9 to force the insert A into the sleeve B. At the same time the cross head 9 is forced downwardly until the sleeve B and insert A are entered over the pilot 29 and core 22.
