Abstract
625,310. Resilient mountings. THIRY, L. F. March 17, 1947, No. 7316. Convention date, March 20, 1946. [Class 108 (iii)] In the assembly of resilient mountings of the kind in which a rubber bush is held under axial and radial stress between inner and outer rigid sleeves, the bush is engaged within the outer member and the inner member is forced axially into the bush so that it is radially compressed and axially elongated, while that end of the bush which is last compressed by the entry of the inner member abuts an axially-movable support having a resilient facing member in contact with the end of the bush. As shown in Fig. 1, a resilient bush 2 is inserted into an outer metal sleeve 1 which is then placed in a holder 4 so that the bush 2 is supported on its face 16 by the resilient end 35 of a piston 6 which can slide in the holder 4. A support 32 on a vertically-movable rod 11 carries a standard 10 on which is placed the inner member 8 which is to be inserted in the bush 2, and a conical leading member 14 is carried in the bore of the tube 8. To insert the tube, the rod 11 is forced down and the member 14 enters the bush 2 and is followed by the tube 8. As the member 32 descends, its surface 34 engages a roller 33, carried by a lever 28. The lever is thereupon rotated, carrying with it arm 27 which, through the link 26 and lever 21, lowers the piston 6 allowing the bush 2 to expand in a downward direction. The downward movement of the piston 6 is arranged to be half the total expected expansion of the bush so that the latter is left symmetrically placed between the sleeves 1, 8. The movement of the piston 6 can be adjusted by nuts 23, 24, and a spring 7 normally holds it in position. In a modification, Fig. 4, a spring- controlled piston 6a replaces the mechanicallycontrolled one. The piston 6a moves against the resistance of a spring 36. The upper and lower limits of movement of the piston are set by a stop 50 and a screwed sleeve 38, respectively. The tension in the spring, and so the way in which the piston moves when the plunger enters the bush, is controlled by a threaded cap 37. In another arrangement, Fig. 6, the operation of inserting the bush into the outer sleeve and the inner sleeve into the bush are performed almost simultaneously, the holder 4b having a funnel-shaped entry 60 into which the bush 2 is placed. A carrier 63, in which the rod 11 is slidable, has a standard 61, the end of which is faced with resilient material 62; the standard forces the bush into the outer sleeve just before the descending rod 11 forces the inner'member 8 into the bush. The carrier 63 is operated by a spring 75 and retracted by a compressed air cylinder 72. The rod 11 is independently operated. Specification 243,679, [Class 108 (iii)], is referred to.
