Abstract

909,396. Pneumatic springs. DUNLOP RUBBER CO. Ltd. April 20, 1959 [May 3, 1958], No. 14184/58. Class 108(3). In an air spring the rebound stroke is controlled by providing a flexible end wall 11, Fig. 1, which is progressively withdrawn from an end closure 2 by a rod 16 when a plunger member 6 abuts a resilient buffer 18. For small deflections, the plunger member 6 moves into and out of a container 1, to which it is connected by a rolling diaphragm 8, without abutting the stop member 18. As the flexible end wall 11 is drawn away from the end closure 2, air pressure acting upwardly on the unsupported area of flexible end wall tends to progressively check further downward movement of the plunger. By stepping the sides of the container 1, the flexible end wall may be made of greater diameter than the rolling diaphragm 8. The invention may be applied to a piston and cylinder type air spring in which a piston similar to the plunger 6 slides in a cylinder which is an extension downwardly of the container 1. An embodiment employing a double convolution bellows 21, Fig. 2, has a flexible end wall 11, which is moved downwardly when a rigid end wall 23 abuts a buffer member 18 carried by a rod 16.
