Abstract

784,898. Photographic processing apparatus. CHEMISCHE FABRIEK L. VAN DER GRINTEN, N. V. Nov. 29, 1955 [Nov. 30, 1954], No. 34194/55. Drawings to Specification. Class 98(2) Apparatus for applying liquid to both sides of a sheet of photographic material such as diazotype paper comprises two liquid-applying rollers of diameter at least 15 mm. and length at least 30 times their diameter, at least one of the rollers being at least partially supported by the other roller and being flexible lengthwise so that if supported only at its ends it sags under its own weight by at least 0.1 per cent of its length. The flexible roller may be a tube such as of rubber closed at both ends, and this may be partially or completely filled with liquid (e.g. water, aqueous solutions or mercury), air under pressure, sand or gunshot. Alternatively the walls of the tube may be supported by a continuous row of rings or discs, by a spiral spring or by a number of solid cylinders ball-andsocketed together. If it is desired to provide the roller with trunnions by which it may be supported in bearings in the apparatus, the tube may be provided with a rigid core and the space between the core and the tube filled with a row of rings of outer diameter less than the internal diameter of the tube and with central holes of greater diameter than the core. Alternatively, the space may be partially or completely filled with liquid or granular bodies. The liquid may be divided into compartments by discs secured to the core. Two rollers only may be used, one rotating in a trough of liquid and supporting a flexible roller whose surface is provided with capillary recesses which are filled with liquid from the first roller when no sheet is between the rollers. Alternatively, two rollers may rotate in liquid and support between them either one flexible roller or two rollers one or both of which may be flexible. A doctor roller may be provided to remove excess liquid from one of the feed rollers. Any of the rollers may be provided with capillary receses such as pits or grooves. Specifications 656,674, 698,080 and 701,559 are referred to.
