Abstract
784,389. Making finned tubes. BROWN FINTUBE CO. May 23, 1956 [June 20, 1955], No. 15926/56. Class 83 (2). [Also in Group XIII] A method of making finned heat exchanger tubes comprises the steps of providing a tube 10 and a plurality of open channel-section fin members 11, assembling the fin members around the whole of the external circumference of the tube in the manner shown, holding the fin members in position on the tube, e.g. by a binding wire or by clamps, and then brazing the base portions 13 of the fin members to the tube. In the preferred form, each fin member is initially formed, e.g. by rolling, with its leg portions 12 at an angle slightly greater than the angle c so that when the fin members are clamped in position prior to brazing the leg portions 12 of adjacent fin members are brought firmly into contact with each other. The fin members may, however, be so formed that adjacent fin members are in contact only adjacent their base portions. When ferrous tubes and fin members are employed, copper brazing is preferred, the copper being applied to the contacting surfaces by plating, by applying a metallic copper paste or powder, or by inserting copper wires in the spaces 20 between the base portions of adjacent fin members. For non-ferrous tubes silver soldering or brazing is used, the assembly after tinning being heated either in a furnace or by heating the tube progressively by means of a torch or an electric heating element on the inside of the tube, by means of a ring burner on the exterior of the tube or by induction heating.
