A filter-press plate 1 has two conduit-forming portions 13, Fig. 3, and 5, Fig. 2, at diagonallyopposite corners, one, 13, being disposed beneath the lower edge and the other, 5, at the upper end of a side. A gas-collecting space is provided in the portion 5 by forming the upper edge of the eye 6 and part of the upper wall 11 of the channel 9 above the level of the filtering area. Adjacent plates are disposed in opposite ways to constitute alternate inlet and outlet plates, and each portion 13, 5 has a spigot on one face and a socket on the other for connection with adjacent like-disposed plates. The front plate of the complete press has inlet conduits at opposite ends of one diagonal and outlet conduits at opposite ends of the other, a single cock serving a main conduit to each pair. A ribless area on each face of the plate 1 in the vicinity of each conduit-forming portion communicates therewith by one or more apertures 10 ; 17, 18, and one or more channels 9 ; 15, 16, and is covered by a perforated detachable gate 20, Fig. 5, having spring fingers 22, 23, Fig. 7, inter-engaging through slots 19 in the plate with those on the opposite gate and having also a rib 26 abutting against studs 25 on the plate. Asbestos or textile filter sheets or kieselguhr filter cakes may be used in the press.
