Hydromechanical variable-speed. gearing between parallel input and output shafts 3, 10 comprises direct and low-speed gear drives 4, 5 and 6, 7 to cylinder blocks 1, 2 with pistons engaging swash-plates 13, 14 of adjustable inclination pivoted on the shaft 10, the cylinders of the two blocks communicating through ports 17 in a disc 16 rigid with the shaft 10. A friction clutch 18 can be engaged, either automatically or at will, to bridge the gear and provide a direct drive between the shafts 3, 10 through a gear pair 19, 20 when the swash-plates are in the direct-drive position shown, that is with plate 13 at maximum inclination and plate 14 at zero inclination.
