872,592. Variable-speed gearing. PERRY, F. G. DE B., and PERBURY ENGINEERING Ltd. Oct. 23, 1957 [July 25, 1956], No. 23072/56. Class 80 (2). In gearing infinitely variable from forward drive to reverse and comprising an epicyclic train 15, 17, 18, two elements 15 and 17 of which are controlled by an infinitely variable drive 10 having two oppositely rotating driven shafts 11, 12 to drive the carrier 19 of the planets 18, a slippable friction coupling 21-24 is provided between the shaft 12 and sun gear 17 adapted to slip on excessive torque load occurring. The gearing can be applied to a gas turbine driven land vehicle and enables engine braking to be controlled, by suitably altering the gear ratio, up to a maximum determined by the slipping clutch. Even if reverse drive is engaged the torque will be limited and to ensure that under such conditions the turbine is not reversed a unidirectional clutch may be included in the drive from the turbine to the gear.
