Abstract
Amorphous silica is produced by passing a suspension of powdered silicon in pure oxygen through an externally heated tube at such a temperature and at such a rate of flow that the silicon is oxidized completely within the tube. The tube is preferably heated to 1000-1350 DEG C. and the residence time of the suspension in the tube is preferably 1.7-3.7 seconds (equivalent to an oxygen flow rate of approximately 2.5-5.5 l./min., using a tube of the dimensions specified in the example). In the example a temperature of 1230-1240 DEG C. and a residence time of 2.7 seconds is employed. As shown, oxygen is passed through inlets 3 into a chamber 1 containing powdered silicon 4 <PICT:0783754/III/1> which is agitated by a stirrer 2, thereby producing a gaseous suspension of silicon which is passed through a ceramic tube 6. A gaseous suspension of silica emerges from the tube, the silica being collected on a plate 10. Tube 6 is mounted in a fire-brick cavity heated by 4 vertical banks of gas burners 8 equally spaced around the cavity.
