Abstract
Nitrogenous fibrous material such as leather, silk, wool and synthetic fibres, e.g. polyamide and polyurethane fibres, are dyed in a weakly alkaline to weakly acid medium with a metalliferous dyestuff which contains one atom of metal, e.g. cobalt or chromium, bound in complex union to two molecules of different monoazo dyestuffs, one of which is free from carboxylic acid groups in a position other than an ortho-position relatively to the azo-linkage and free from sulphonic acid groups and the other is also free from carboxylic acid groups in a position other than an ortho-position relatively to the azo-linkage and contains a single sulphonic acid group. At least one of the monoazo dyestuffs may contain a sulphonic acid amide group or a sulphone group or a sulphonic acid aryl ester group. The dyebath is preferably maintained at a pH of 8-5, by the addition of a weak acid, e.g. acetic acid, and the pH may be caused to fall during dyeing by the addition of, for example, ammonium acetate. Dyeing may be effected at a raised temperature and, if desired, under pressure. The dyeings may be subsequently steamed. Long lists of metalliferous dyestuffs are given and examples describe the dyeing of wool and nylon. Specifications 765,355 and 771,320 are referred to.
