Abstract
783,357. Sleeve couplings. BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S (SUBMARINE CABLES), Ltd. April 12, 1956 [April. 12, 1955], No. 10542,55. Class 38 (1). An insertion piece for use in making a joint between hollow cable conductors comprises an open helix 10 of metal strip which supports and extends beyond the ends of an intermediate portion comprising a layer of wires 9 wound helically thereon. The wires 9 are retained in position either by soldering or by tape binders. In making a joint between two cables 1, 2, Fig. 1, having conductors consisting of layers of wires 3, 4, the inner layer being stranded about a supporting helix 5, the cable insulation 6 is first cut back and the wires of each layer 3, 4 turned outwards and backwards. After forcing the helices 5 back inside the cable conductors, the projecting ends of the helix 10 of the insertion piece are then inserted in the helices 5 until the ends of the intermediate portion 7 about said helices whereupon the wires of the layers 3, 4 of one cable are turned back on to the insertion piece one by one and butted and brazed to the wires of the other cable, being suitably trimmed prior to brazing to provide staggered joints. The joint is then insulated similarly to the factoryapplied insulation on the cables.
