Abstract
A dilute mineral acid coating bath, suitable for application to stainless steel, comprises a mineral acid other than a halogen acid, manganese oxalate and a sulphur-bearing compound which contains oxygen and which will yield sulphur dioxide and sulphur upon decomposition in acid solution, the quantity of manganese oxalate being 1-18 grams litre, the quantity of the sulphur compound being such that a 10 ml. sample of the bath will react with at least 4 ml. of 0.05 normal iodine solution, using starch indicator, to a blue endpoint, and the amount of free acidity being such as to yield a pH of 0.7-2. The mineral acid is preferably sulphuric, sulphonic, sulphurous, nitric or phosphoric acid, the manganese oxalate may be introduced into the bath as such or may be formed in the bath by addition of manganese phosphate, sulphate, nitrate, carbonate or oxide together with oxalic acid, and the sulphur compound may be a thiosulphate, sulphite, hydrosulphide, thionate, or preferably, a meta-bisulphate. The surface of the stainless steel is depassivated, before coating, by treatment with an activating acid pickling solution containing nitric, hydrofluoric, hydrochloric and/or sulphuric acid; three specific examples are given of this solution. Six examples are given of the coating procedure, and it is stated that the coatings produced facilitate the drawing of stainless steel. Specifications 741,128 and 748,383 are referred to.
