783,101. Valves. BRITISH THOMSONHOUSTON CO., Ltd. Nov. 11, 1955 [Nov. 12, 1954], No. 32842/54. Class 135. In an hydraulicallyoperated emergency stop valve for a steam turbine, comprising a balanced main steam valve 5 mounted in the valve inlet chamber 1 and a pilot by-pass valve 6, the operating spindle 8 common to both valves is made in two parts connected together by a thrust bearing 11, the lower rotatable part being operable through bevel gearing and a handwheel 10 and screwthreadedly connected to a spring-loaded, piston-like member 4 engageable with a seating 15. The member 4 carries a flexible diaphragm 18 which coacts with a seating 16 prior to the engagement of the seating 15 by the member 4. To set the valve in its normal open position the handwheel 10 is first rotated in a valve closing direction to move the member 4 upwardly against its spring to seat the diaphragm 18. Emergency trip gear is then set to establish oil pressure beneath the diaphragm which opposes the steam pressure and the spring whence the valves 5 and 6 may be manually opened and will remain open until the emergency gear trips or a failure in the oil supply occurs. When the valves are open leakage of steam past the upper part of the spindle is prevented by the engagement of a piston member 13 on a spindle guide bush 9. The flexibility of the diaphragm ensures that when the valves are open the member 13 and the diaphragm 16 both remain seated despite any expansion differences between the spindle and valve body. A strainer is fitted in the inlet chamber and any leakage past the spindle that might occur escapes through an outlet 14. Specification 611,691 is referred to.
