782,716. Disc brakes. SOC. D'INVENTIONS AERONAUTIQUES ET MECANIQUES S.I.A.M. July 14, 1955 [July 15, 1954], No. 20470/55. Class 103 (1). In a disc brake for a vehicle wheel, two groups of hydraulic brake cylinders are provided ; the first group of cylinders being internal and formed in a central plate 13, having oppositely-working pistons 15, 16 slidably mounted within the internal cylinders; a sleeve 9, 10, carrying end plates 11, 12 rigidly coupled to the central plate 13 by bolts 14 is adapted to slide axially without rotation on the axis of the wheel; single pistons are slidably mounted in external cylinders 22 mounted in one of the end plates 11; two brake discs being secured for rotation with the wheel 1 and mounted one on each side of the central plate 13 between it and the end plates 11, 12. Six axially aligned spacedapart cylinders are provided in end plate 11 and central plate 13; four of the six sets being supplied from one conduit; namely the supply conduit, and the remaining two sets being supplied through a separate emergency conduit; so that the latter may be used for parking purposes. In operation, when pressure fluid is supplied through either the supply or emergency conduits to the appropriate cylinders, the pistons in cylinders 22 are moved to the right and the reaction on the axially slidable end plate 11 moves end plate 12 to the left to bring the friction pads 25 carried by axially slidable disc 24 and the friction pads 21 carried by end plate 12 into frictional contact with one side of brake discs 5 and 6 respectively. Simultaneously pressure fluid is supplied to the corresponding internal cylinder mounted in central plate 13, thus forcing pistons 15 and 16 oppositely outwards to force axially slidable discs 17, 19 carrying friction pads 18, 20 respectively into frictional contact with the other side of the brake discs 5 and 6.
