Abstract

782,401. Printing machines. AMERICAN CYANAMID CO. Sept. 28, 1955 [Oct. 4, 1954], No. 27617/55. Class 100(2) [Also in Group XV] An appparatus for marking indicia on soft plastic strip material adapted for the manufacture of soft plastic capsules, comprises a marking roller and co-operating pressure roller adjustably located with respect to the marking roller, positive drive means at each end of the marking and pressure rollers, and means, adjustable while the machine is in operation, to axially and angularly adjust the marking roll. A plastic strip 13, to be formed into capsules, is fed between a marking roller 11 and pressure roller 12. The rollers 11 and 12 are mounted in individual bearings in a frame 21. One end of the roller 11 is pressed by a spring 26 against a screw 28 engaging a bar 27 engaging a slot in the shaft 25 carrying the roller 11. Thus adjustment of the screw 28 effects lateral adjustment of the roller 11. The shaft 25 is positioned in journal blocks 22 each having a positioning ball 31 pressed upwardly by a spring 32, the ball 31 and spring 32 being retained by a retainer 33 slidable in the blocks 22. The pressure roller 12 is. journalled in blocks 34 slidable in slots 23 and resting on the balls 31. Screws 36 adjust the gap between the rollers 11 and 12. One end of the roller 11 is driven by a pinion 60 engaging a pinion 30 on the shaft 25, such that the roller 11 is driven at the same speed as the strip. The pinion 60 is on one end of a hollow shaft 61 carrying a helical gear 64 keyed thereto but axially slidable thereon. The shaft 61 is carried by a spindle 66 threaded through the frame 21. A helical gear 64, carried by the shaft 61, is angularly, adjustable by a knurled knob 67 on the spindle 66 to vary the angular setting of the roller 11. The pinion 30 drives a pinion 38 on the roller 12, while a further pinion 29 on the shaft 25 drives a pinion 37 on the roller 12. Inking-apparatus:- Ink is supplied to roller 11 by a rubber transfer roller 14 and a rubber inking roller 15 partially submerged in an ink tough 16. A wiper roller 18 controls the quantity of ink transferred by the roller 15 and spreader rollers 19 and 20 ensure a uniform distribution of ink on the roller 11. The pressure between the rollers 14 and 15 determines the rate of ink transfer such pressure being adjustable by screws 45 which compress springs 44 positioned between the roller journals. The position of the roller 14 with respect to the roller 12 is adjustable by tapered screws 42 which engage slidable bearings carrying the roller 14. The rollers 14 and 15 are driven through pinions 50...53 by the pinions 29, 39. Ink is supplied to the trough 16 by a pipe 57 leading from an ink reservoir 59. Specifications 617,723, 631,484 and 674,172 [all in Group V] are referred to.
