[Also in Group XXXIX] A loud-speaker of the horn type for use in situations in which excessive noises or explosions might rupture the diaphragm is provided with a valve which permits the passage of sound from the horn but closes if external pressure is excessive, the valve being held closed except when the loud-speaker is in use. The valve V is as described in Specification 462,397, [Group XXXIX], but is normally held closed under the pressure of a spring 13. When the loud-speaker is to be used a solenoid S is energized to permit the valve V to take up the position shown in Fig. 2. While the loudspeaker is in use, if an explosion occurs the external pressure presses the valve against the perforated plate 6a so saving the pressure unit 5 from damage.
