Abstract

782,273. Electromagnetic interrupters. SIMMS MOTOR UNITS, Ltd., and ROBINSON, E. L. Sept. 22, 1955 [Sept. 24, 1954], No. 27723/54. Class 38 (5). [Also in Group XXXVIII] A contact device 6 for flashing direction indicator lights on a vehicle (see Group XXXVIII) comprises two operating coils 9 and 10 arranged in parallel but with a condenser 11 in series with the coil 10, as shown. The coils 9 and 10 are wound such that their magnetic effects oppose when current passes in the same sense in each. An armature 14. carries moving contact 15 which co-operates with fixed contact sl6 and 17. The armature 14 is biased to hold moving contact 15 against fixed contact 16. When the direction indicator switch 5 is moved, for example, to the left as shown, a circuit is established from battery 26 through lamps 3 and 1 to the operating coils 9 and 10, and thence via contacts 16 and 15 to earth. Lamps 3 and 1 do not light owing to the resistance of coils 9 and 10. The current in coil 10 as condenser 11 charges causes opposition of coils 9 and 10, until the condenser is charged, whereupon coil 9 attracts the armature 14 which moves over to make contacts 15 and 17 and flash lamps 3 and 1. Coils 9 and 10 are simultaneously disconnected from the external circuit and condenser 11 discharges via the closed loop formed by the coils. Thus current flows in opposite senses in the coils 9 and 10 and the armature remains attracted until condenser 11 is discharged. The armature then returns to close contacts 15 and 16 and the cycle repeats.
