Abstract

781,903. Weighing apparatus. GENERAL RAILWAY SIGNAL CO. Oct. 6, 1954 [Oct. 14, 1953], No. 28778/54. Class 143 [Also in Group XXXVII] In an apparatus for estimating the weight of a railway car, a rail 1 of the track is cut away to provide space for levers 6, 7, which are pivoted at 8 and form an inclined hump above the upper surface of the rail, which is depressed as a car wheel passes over it. A housing 11 is attached to the lever 6 and is moved by the lever 6 against a compression spring 13 in a housing 12 which is supported on auxiliary ties 23. An arm 17 is spring-pressed against an adjustable stop 20 and movement of the housing 11 in accordance with the wheel load will depress the arm 17 a corresponding amount and turn a shaft 18 operating a contactor CC. Fig. 5, which is provided with adjustable cams 30...33 operating sequentially the contact members 34...37 to establish circuits for the indicating means. Each cam is provided with a hardened insert 44, Fig. 6 , which co-operates with cam-surfaces 48. 49, on a rocker arm 45 carrying a contact finger 50 which is movable between stationary contacts 51, 52 of a contact member 34 &c. In an alternative arrangement, Figs. 7 to 12 (not shown) the rail is cut away to accommodate a single pivoted lever which is formed with inclined surfaces sloping .towards each end, a dash-pot is provided which delays the return of the lever after the load has been removed, and the contactor is operated by a spring- loaded plunger which successively closes the contacts.
