781,596. Batteries. HAMMOND, E. Nov. 4, 1955 [Nov. 4, 1954], No. 31862/54. Class 53. A filling plug for an accumulator is shaped as a filling funnel and includes an upstanding float - actuated liquid - level indicator. As shown, the filling plug is of conventional external shape but is hollow with a closed lower end. A dished plate 14 is a push fit within the upper part of the plug and has an integral skirt which is a push fit in the lower part. The hollow upper part of the plug communicates with the interior of the accumulator via holes 16 and three notches in the bottom of the skirt which register with three holes in the bottom of the lower part of the plug. A fourth hole 13<SP>1</SP> registers with a groove 18 in the skirt which leads to a lateral vent hole 12. The liquid-level indicator comprises an inverted cup-shaped float 19 mounted on a stem 20 having upper and lower stops 22, 21 respectively. A removable cap may be fitted over the vent plug. The filling plug and plate 14 may be made of polystyrene and the float may be made of polyethylene, painted cork or expanded ebonite. According to the Provisional Specification, the float 19 may be a sealed hollow celluloid body or the floatactuated indicator may be replaced by a vent tube subject to airlock to prevent overfilling.
