Abstract
781,268. Speedometers. SUCKER GES., GEB. Oct. 9, 1953 [Jan. 17, 1953], No. 27825/53. Class 106 (3). [Also in Group XXXV] An apparatus for comparing and regulating the expansion or shrinkage in treated textile materials comprising means for measuring and comparing the speeds of two shafts respectively driven by a pair of rolls located one in front of and one behind the treatment position. In the first example, Figs. 1 and 2, the shafts 1 and 2 are connected respectively to one of two rolls (not shown) the speeds of which are to be kept to a desired ratio. The gearing between the rolls and the shafts 1, 2 is such that at the desired speed ratio the shafts 1 and 2 rotate at the same particular speed. On the shafts 1, 2 are discs 3, 4 urged by springs 5, 6 into engagement with a friction disc 7 rotatably mounted on a hollow shaft 8 carried by a member 20 having, racks 20<SP>1</SP> which mesh with pinions 67, 671. The member 20 carries an internally threaded sleeve 9 which engages the upper threaded end of a shaft 10 which, at its lower end, carries a friction wheel 11 located between two discs 12, 13 on a shaft 14 rotated by the friction gearing 3, 15. In operation, when the discs 3, 4 are rotating at the same particular speed the disc 7 is rotated and the assembly 8, 9, 10, 20 remains vertical so that the disc 11 is free of the discs 12, 13. If the speeds of the discs 3, 4 begin to vary the spindle 10 will be tilted to bring the disc 11 into engagement with one or other of the discs 12, 13 so that the shaft 10 is rotated thereby moving the assembly 8, 9, 10, 20 up or down until the disc 7 engages points on the discs 3, 4 having the same linear velocity. The pinion 67 is connected to a pointer 16 which moves over a scale 18. The pinion 671 is connected to a contact arm 16<SP>1</SP> of a potentiometer which controls the driving motor of one of the shafts to restore the desired speed ratio. In a second embodiment, Fig. 3, the shaft 1 is connected directly to one sun wheel of a differential gear the other sun wheel of which is connected through a continuously variable gear 22, 23, 21 to the shaft 2. The friction wheel 23 is carried by a collar 25 which is mounted on a screwed shaft 26 which carries a pinion 27 which meshes with a gear 29 fixed to the planet carrier of the differential gear. The friction wheel 23 is initially set by a knob 28 and its position is indicated by a pointer 24 which moves over a scale 36<SP>1</SP>. If the shafts 1, 2 retain the desired speeds the planet carrier of the differential remains stationary. If the speeds vary, however, the planet carrier moves and rotates the screwed shaft 26 through the gears 29, 27 so that the friction wheel 23 is moved left or right until the sun wheels of the differential again rotate at the same speed. The movement of the planet carrier operates a switch which controls the speed of a motor which drives one or other of the shafts 1, 2 so that the initial conditions are re-established. In another example, Fig. 6, the shaft 1 carries a roller 41 which rotates a friction roller 43 mounted on a shaft 45. The shaft 2 carries a conical roller 42 which drives a roller 44 mounted on a shaft 46. The shaft 45 screws into the shaft 46 which carries a pointer 47 which moves over a scale 50. A contact arm 49 is fixed to the pointer 47 and moves over a potentiometer 48. Two limit switches 51, 52 are provided and closure of either of them by the pointer 47 energizes an electromagnet 53 which withdraws the rollers 43, 44 from the rollers 41, 42 respectively. In a modification of this arrangement, Fig. 8 (not shown) the rollers 41, 42 are replaced by friction discs.
