Abstract

781,233. Blast furnace cooling plates. ANDERSON, O. B., and JACOBS, B. I. Nov. 9, 1955, No. 32048/55. Class 51 (2). Cooling plates 5 are held in a blast furnace wall comprising an inner refractory lining 1 spaced from an outer shell 3, by cooling plate holder assemblies 14 inserted 'through openings in the shell 3, each assembly comprising a collar 16 welded in a shell opening, and a hollow holder 15 extending through and being detachably connected to the collar, the cooling plate 5 being sealed in the neck 17 of the holder by fireclay packing 18. The holder 15 and collar 16 have co-operating flanges 20 and 22 respectively held together by bolts 24 passing through vertically elongated slots 21 in the flange 20. Outer movement of each cooling plate is prevented by a channel-shaped stop 27 engaging the cooling plate outer wall 10 and formed with an opening for a wedge 28 passing through vertically-spaced loops 29 on the holder flange 20. The openings in the shell 3 are in spaced rows and are in staggered relationship. On assembling the wall, the collars 16 are welded in the openings so that each cooling plate 5 extends an equal distance from the front face 13 of the refractory lining. The bolts 24 are not securely tightened until the furnace has been heated up, expansion of the refractory lining, and consequential movement of the cooling plates, being allowed for by the elongated slots 21 in the holder flanges 20. Each of the cooling plates 5, Fig. 7, is a hollow casting, preferably copper, having a partition 7 dividing it into two chambers connected at the front end by a passage 8, and formed with water inlet and outlet openings 11 and 12.
