Abstract

Joints are filled with compositions comprising a finely-divided swellable synthetic rubber or synthetic resin and a hydrocarbon oil capable of swelling the rubber or resin and forming a gel with it at atmospheric temperature. The rubber or resin may be a copolymer of butadiene with methyl isopropenyl ketone, styrene or acrylonitrile, or polystyrene. The oil may be "aromatic extracts" from crude oil or highly aromatic oils from tars containing non-hydrocarbon, e.g. phenolic, constituents, e.g. heavy creosote oil or anthracene oil. Tar and/or finely divided pitch with an anthracene or other oil and fillers, e.g. asbestos, coconut-shell flour, sawdust, powdered cork, powdered limestone, whiting, silica flour, crushed rock and china clay may be added. The composition may contain minor amounts of a volatile solvent compatible with the rubber or resin. The solid and liquid components are preferably mixed immediately before use, e.g. in filling joints in airfield runways.
