Abstract

A moulding composition comprising (1) at least one thermoplastic alkenyl aromatic resin which comprises polymerized monovinyl aromatic hydrocarbons containing a single benzene nucleus and/or copolymers of at least one such monovinyl aromatic hydrocarbon and from 30 to 1% of an alpha-alkyl styrene and (2) at least one synthetic rubber prepared by the emulsion polymerization of styrene with from 30 to 70% of butadiene is made by mixing with the rubber latex 0.5 to 5% of a polyethylene glycol of average molecular weight from 200 to 600, drying the latex and incorporating by mechanically working the latex solids with the alkenyl aromatic resin, while heat plastified at 150 DEG to 250 DEG C., in a proportion of from 15 to 40% of the latex solids to obtain a uniform composition. The alkenyl aromatic resin may be a polymer of styrene, vinyltoluene, ar-ethylvinylbenzene, vinyl xylene, ar-isopropylvinylbenzene or copolymers of one or more of these with alpha-methyl-, or -ethylstyrene or para-methyl-alpha-methylstyrene. The latex solids may be comminuted prior to mixing with the aromatic resin. In an example a mineral oil is included in the composition as a lubricant. The use of polyethylene glycols of molecular weight outside the above range is mentioned. Specifications 672,290 and 672,667, [Group II], are referred to.
