[Also in Group XXXIX] In a sound reproducing system comprising an amplifier and a loud-speaker of the base-reflex type, the loud-speaker has a volume parameter v less than 1 where v=ac<SP>2</SP>/bd<SP>2</SP> and a=the sum of the masses of the moving members of the loud-speaker mechanism; b= the sum of the mass of the air load on the port and the equivalent mass of the air inside the duct reduced to the port; c=the effective area of the duct; and d=the effective area of the loud-speaker diaphragm, and the total equivalent mechanical series resistance is made larger than that necessary to make Qo=1 if the loud-speaker is fitted in a resonant chamber tuned to the resonant frequency of the loud-speaker and having a volume parameter equal to one. The larger equivalent resistance is obtained by a layer of acoustic resistance material such as rock-wool between the diaphragm and the resonator and/or by feeding the loud-speaker from an amplifier having a low or negative output impedance.
