Abstract
780,722. Aerial warfare. NORTHROP AIRCRAFT. Inc. June 13, 1955, No. 16995/55. Class 9(2) [Also in Group XXXIII] Streamlined structures 2 at the wing-tips of an aircraft are divided into two compartments 3, 4 by a transverse heat-resistant wall 5, the fore compartment 3 housing rockets 7 and the rear compartment containing a fuel tank 6. The rockets 7 are mounted in launching tubes 8 symmetrically arranged around the longitudinal axis of the structure 2, which has a frangible nose 9. Apertured plates 10, 12 support the tubes 8, so that the rocket nozzles open into a chamber 18 formed by arcuate walls 19, 20 and plates 21, 22 between the plate 12 and wall 5 to provide an exhaust passage leading to an opening 23 remote from the fuselage. Within the chamber 18 and aligned with the rockets 7, Fig. 3, are electric igniters 16 connected to the cockpit by leads 17 taken through heat-resistant vertical members 15, which support the igniters. An arcuate element 14 also of heat resistant material receives the upper ends of members 15. The rockets are loaded in the tubes 8 at the muzzle end and the nose 9 is then secured in position. On discharge of the first rocket, the nose 9 is broken and the exhaust gases pass through the chamber 18 to the port 23. Specifications 780,721 and 772,884 are referred to.
