Abstract
787,722. Gun installation for aircraft. NORTH AMERICAN AVIATION, Inc. Feb. 22, 1956 [Feb. 24, 1955], No. 5472/56. Class 4. In an aircraft 1 powered by a jet propulsion plant having an air inlet 2 and wherein guns 4, 5, 6 are mounted to fire through openings 7, 8, 9 in the cowling, means are provided to deflect the discharge gases from the guns so that they do not enter the air intake 2. A blast tube 14a for each gun 14 enters the rear end of a discharge duct 13, which is formed with part annular deflecting plates 11, 12 inclined at 60 degrees to the length of the duct whereby the discharge gases are swept outwardly as shown. In a further arrangement, Fig. 5 (not shown) the blast tube extends into a chamber having a deflecting end wall and a gas discharge opening in the aircraft cowling whilst in a still further embodiment, Fig. 7 (not shown) in which a gun fires forwardly of an air intake in each side of the fuselage, the said chamber discharges into a downwardly and rearwardly extending conduit which connects with an opening in the underside of the fuselage.
