Abstract

780,704. Applying lids to containers. LITCHFIELD, A. F. Feb. 28, 1955 [March 3, 1954; May 27, 1954], Nos. 6169/54 and 15630/54. Class 125(2). [Also in Group XXX] Apparatus for feeding lids to a lidding machine comprises a lid magazine 71 provided with tangential slots in which reciprocate respective bars 44 each bar having a wedge-shaped separator 46, the reciprocating movement first introducing the separators between the lids to release the lowermost lid and then, when reversed, withdrawing the separators from beneath the lids. As illustrated, the lowermost lid normally rests on the stops 47 of the bars 44 till roller 51 is engaged by a rotating member of the lidding machine advancing from the right to swing roller 51 over to the position shown to cause separators 46 to slip between the lids and to release the lowermost lid to fall on to floor 64. The said rotating member then engages lever 69 to cause discharging lever 68 to discharge the released lid on to shoot 35 where it is ready for lidding. Additionally the lidding machine includes a lever which is actuated by the movement of the can so as to release catch 53 thus to free the bars 44 to release a lid when operated, but if no can is present then the bars 44 are held by the said catch and no lid is released till the next can enters the lidding machine.
