Well-boring apparatus comprises a plurality of pulleys n, o, p, j, k, m carried upon a rigid structure a positioned at the head of a derrick, wherein the blocks are slidably mounted on carriage e so as to be displaceable, e.g. by a piston and cylinder. The carriage may be mounted on rollers carried by the structure a so that each of the two hoist cables passing over the separate sets of pulleys n, o, p and j, k, m may be brought in turn over the same bore-hole.
