[Also in Group XXIV] Linkwork for converting a circular movement into a proportional straight line movement comprises a needle 4 pivoted on a rod 1 secured to the rotatable shaft 2 of a measuring instrument and an arm 8 pivoted about a fixed axis 9 and slidably coupled to the needle 4 and to the rod 1, the dimensions being chosen so that rotation of the shaft 2 results in proportional linear movement of the end 5 of the needle 4. The needle 4 may carry a pointer or a stylus.
