Abstract

778,954. Trailer vehicles; vehicle couplings. WILKINS, C. T. Feb. 11, 1955 [Nov. 16, 1953], No. 31674/53. Classes 103(5) and 108(1). A coupling, for a trailer having only a single rear wheel, a sharpened end 3, and anglesectioned girders 7 supporting the body and wheel, comprises a cruciform member 10, 11, fixed to the towing vehicle bumper 13 by means of studs 14 and a bracket 12 to pivot in a vertical longitudinal plane, and removably and pivotally attached by means of a withdrawable bolt 9 and a bracket 8 to the trailer. The bolt 9 passes through the limb 10 at an angle to the vertical so that when turning a corner the trailer banks inwardly about the bolt 9 to counteract centrifugal force, whilst the studs 14 permit the trailer to pivot in a vertical plane. In a modification the bracket 8 may be arranged with its lugs positioned transversely of the trailer and the cruciform member 10, 11 is fixed to the trailer by the studs 14 instead of to the towing vehicle. Rubber stops 18 are provided on the trailer body and are initially packed out to engage the bumper 13 on full lock turns. The trailer may have open mesh detachable sides for carrying livestock, and may also be provided with detachable handles so that it may be used as a wheelbarrow.
