Abstract
778,747. Gravity-separation apparatus. SIMON-CARVES, Ltd. (Otto & Co., Dr. C.). Sept. 20, 1955, No. 26827/55. Class 46. Water containing thin tar, heavy tar and dirt, e.g. from a gas cooling installation is admitted to a tank 1, whence thin tar is discharged at 3 and water is pumped (5) away at 2 for return to its source by pipe 6. The heavy tar, mixed with the dirt and some thin tar, accumulates in a draw-off tank 13. When sufficient has accumulated, slide valves 14 are closed, and of the valves 7, 8, 11, 12 and 19, formerly closed, valves 7 and 8 are opened, and a three-way valve 16 is turned to effect communication between pipes 15 and 17. Water is thereby forced by pump 5 along a pipe 9 and a pipe connection 10 and through closed straining slide-valve 11 to the draw-off tank 13, from which it removes the thin tar and conveys it along pipes 15 and 17 back to the tank 1. (The valve 11 has a valve plate with small holes and will allow water and thin tar to pass when closed. but will allow heavy tar and dirt to pass only when opened). Then valve 8 is closed, valve 16 is turned to shut off pipe 15 from pipes 17 and 18, and valve 19 is opened. Rinsing water still contained in the draw-off tank 13 thereupon passes through valves 11 and 19 to the thin tar pipe 3 via a pipe 20, any particles of dirt and heavy tar being retained in a straining pot 21. The upward flushing of tank 13 is thereafter repeated until, by visual inspection of the end 22 of pipe 17, the water is seen to be free of tar, after which rinsing water is again drawn off through valve 19. Finally valve 19 is closed and valves 11 and 12 opened to permit discharge of heavytar and dirt from tank 13 via pipe connection 10. The apparatus is restored to normal operation by closing valves 7, 8, 11, 12, 16 and 19 and opening valves 14.
