Abstract

555,271. Filters. PEEBLES, J., and GLENFIELD & KENNEDY, Ltd. Feb. 4, 1942, No. 1495. [Class 46] The screen 1 of a water-strainer 2 is cleaned by rotating a co-axial tube 7, supplied with water under pressure through inlets 8 from an external chamber 3 and carrying helically-disposed nozzles 9. A baffle ring 10 protects the screen from injury by inflowing water to be strained. As shown in Fig. 3, a cylinder 11 is connected with the housing 2 and its discharge pipe 6B so that, when a given difference of pressure is set up, a piston 11<SP>1</SP> therein is moved downwards and operates a bell-crank lever 12 to rotate a tube 13 whereby the inlet and outlet valves 5, 6 are closed and the valve (4) for the pressure liquid, a discharge valve for sludge and a valve controlling a water motor 15 are opened. The latter drives the tube 7 through worm gearing 17. The lever is returned to the normal position by the weight of a container 20 when the latter is filled by a branch pipe 19 on the exhaust pipe 18 of the motor. The amount of water entering the container is greater than the amount leaking from the partially open cock 20c, which is adjusted for varying the period of cleaning. Twin apparatus may be connected together so that each takes cleaning water from the outlet of the other.
