Abstract
778,491. Cables. COMPAGNIE GENERALE D'ELECTRICITE. Feb. 8, 1956 [June 20, 1955], No. 4001./56. Class 36. [Also in Group XXXVII] In a cable comprising insulated power conductors 1, 2, 3 and an insulated earth conductor 6 embedded in a semi-conducting mass 4 which constitutes a screen insulated from earth, the screen 4 has a high resistivity and the insulation 7 of the earth conductor 6 is surrounded by a semi-conducting sheath 13 of low resistivity. The screen 4 may also be enclosed in a semiconducting sheath 14 of low resistivity which is urrounded by insulation 15. In operation the screen 4 is connected, through a conductor 5, to a low voltage current source 8 connected to earth and to a relay 9 controlling a switch which disconnects the supply to the power conductors in the event of a fault. The sheaths 13 and 14 reduce the contact resistance at faults occurring between the earth conductor 6 and the screen 4 or between the screen 4 and an earthed foreign body penetrating the screen, thus increasing the current due to such fault to ensure more reliable tripping of the relay 9 without increasing the current due to a fault between a power conductor and the screen 4.
