Abstract

109,679. Whitaker, F. B. Oct. 16, 1916. Protective arrangements.-In the protection of electric conductors, feeders, or cables which have a conducting-shield c, insulated from but surrounding the conductor &c. a the shield is completely insulated and is connected to the conductor through a circuit containing a tripping- coil c, which either directly or through relays opens the main switch f on occurrence of a fault. In a multi-core cable, each conductor has a separate shield. When a fault occurs in the outer insulation or in the insulation between two shields in a multi-core cable, a trip circuit is completed ever the fault and the normal earth connexion of the cable. A separate trip circuit as above described may be placed at each end of the cable; or the opening of the switch at one end may close a relay circuit to open the switch at the other end. In a three-phase cable as shown the opening of any one switch is followed by the opening of the others. The shield may be divided along its length. In systems where the conductors are supported at intervals, the shields may be discontinuous or the shield may be embodied in the insulation, the shield not completely surrounding the conductor. A pilot wire may be embodied in the cable and used for the relay circuits.
