Abstract

717. Bowden, J. H., and Thompson. H. F. J. July 16. Protective arrangements. - A system for the protection of electric cables having a conducting-shield 5, Fig. 1, round any of the conductors of the cable, and also an insulated conducting-shield 8 surrounding the whole of the conductors of the cable, and finally the usual lead covering 9. the earthing of the outer shield 8 by external damage places a high' voltage upon the one or more inner shields, which voltage operates cut-outs to isolate the faulty section. In the arrangement shown for a three - phase cable, each of the conductors is surrounded by a conducting-shield 5, the shields being in electrical contact and connected to earth at each end of the cable through an electro-magnetic relay 13 in series with a sparkgap 12, and the outer shield 8 is connected to earth through a relay 23 and through a small part of the secondary 27 of a transformer supplied from an independent source. In the event of external damage to the outer shield and the consequent earthing thereof, the relay is operated and connects the full voltage of the secondary winding 27 through the back contact 28 of the relay to the inner shields, producing a discharge through the spark-gap device and operating the relay 13 which controls the action of the main cut-out 19, 21. The relay 13 breaks the discharge circuit which is consequently diverted to the other end of the cable where it operates similar cut-outs so that the cable is isolated at both ends. The invention is applicable to single conductors and to concentric cables.
