Abstract
737,746. Testing insulation resistance. SOUTHERN UNITED TELEPHONE CABLES, Ltd. May 26, 1953 [May 23, 1952], No. 13146/52. Class 37. In apparatus for testing the insula. tion of a number of conductors in sequence through a series resistor the device which normally operates to connect the next conductor to the test voltage fails to operate if the insulation of the conductor under test is defective or below the standard required. The invention is described with reference to testing the quads of a communication cable. In the Figure, following closure of start switch X relay A operates and locks and energizes B which also locks whereby the quads 30-33 are coupled to the test apparatus and test voltage 28 is injected into the first line 33 through resistor 26. If wire 33 is sound neons 21-22 glow and relay C operates and if wires 32, 31 and 30 are also satisfactory their neons 21-22 and relays D, E and F respond in sequence through individual resistor 26 to test-voltage 28. If a wire (e.g. 31) has defective insulation the leakage current means a reduced voltage to earth at the junction of the insulation resistance and the test resistor 26 so that neons 21-22 fail to strike and the relay concerned E will not operate to connect the next wire 30 to the test voltage 28. The operator knows that 31 is defective because only the neons 21-22 for 33 and 32 are glowing. When F operates a slugged relay G is energized and A and B revert to disconnect the lines 30-33 from the test apparatus. When G operates apparatus may be introduced which connects another group of wires for testing in place of 30-33 or connects 30-33 to different testing equipment.
