In a liquid level indicating device comprising a gauge formed of two glass plates 5, 6 and side plates 3, 4 clamped between slotted front and rear plates 1, 2 and containing an opaque liquid, e.g. mercury, the level of which varies proportionally with variations in the liquid level to be indicated, the gauge being illuminated from the rear by a lamp 8 disposed in a housing 7, an additional slot 9 (Fig. 2) is provided through the glass mounting beside and parallel to the gauge glass slot and of length equal to the full significant length of the gauge. Alternatively, Fig. 3, a strip of translucent plastic 10 is fixed into a slot in the side edge of the housing 7 and bent as shown so that in either case a strip of light of length equal to the full range of the indicator is visible alongside the gauge glass to enable a comparison to be made between the full scale and the obscured length of the glass. The indicator tube may be coloured as shown in Fig. 1, the length of coloration being determined so that the red portion is obscured by the mercury &c., unless a dangerously low level of liquid occurs, the green portion extends over a length corresponding to the normal safe change in level and the yellow runs from a point indicating a dangerously high level upwards.
