Abstract

778,156. Automatic guns. BREVETS AERO-MECANIQUES SOC. ANON. Sept. 27, 1955, [Oct. 16, 1954], No. 27520/55. Class 92. Relates to an automatic gun which is movable as a whole for recoil with respect to a support, e.g., an aircraft wing, against the action of a spring and in which this recoil controls a part of the operation of the feed device for the gun. According to the invention powder gases supplied from a tap in the barrel are fed to a device which urges the gun in the recoil direction every time a shot is fired. This arrangement provides the requisite energy for operation of the feed device and permits the provision of a strong spring for urging the gun forwardly after recoil, which spring returns the gun quickly to the firing position and overcomes the shock of the breech block against its return spring at the end of its rearward stroke which shock tends to cause rearward movement of the gun. The gun is supported at the front by an aircraft wing element 6, Fig. 1, through a ball and socket device 7 in which the gun can slide and recoil against the action of a spring 8. At the rear, the gun is supported by an arm 9 hinged at its ends to the gun and to the wing framework. A feed mechanism 10 does not recoil with the gun which slides relatively thereto and is connected by a link 11 to the element 6. At every recoil a finger 12 carried by the gun lifts a roller 13 which serves to wind up a spring operating the feed mechanism. The gun barrel carries a piston 14 movable in a cylinder 15 provided in the ball element 7 and a gas tap 16 in the gun barrel feeds gases into the cylinder 15 to urge the whole of the gun rearwardly with respect to the elements 6, 7 every time a shot is fired, this action being added to the recoil proper. Shock-absorbers 19 may be interposed between a ring 17 on the gun barrel and a ring 18 rigid with the ball 7 and arranged so that the recoil stroke is not braked but at least the end of the forward return movement of the gun is slowed down. Each may consist of an oil filled cylinder 19, Fig. 3 in which moves a piston 20 provided with check valves 21 producing braking action during forward movement of the gun.
