Abstract
1444547 Slaughtering animals ACCLES & SHELVOKE Ltd 31 Oct 1973 [16 Nov 1972] 52917/72 Heading AIM A captive bolt pistol comprises a barrel and breech block unit 2 which is slidable in the bore 3 of the body of the pistol to strike a cartridge against a fixed firing pin 23. The device is fixed by tapping the bolt 17 or barrel against the head of the animal. A cylindrical expansion chamber 13 in the unit 2 receives a piston formed on the rear end of the captive bolt 17 when the latter is in its retracted position. The unit 2 is rotatable between a loading and extraction position and a firing position, and the cartridge chamber 15 is offset from the longitudinal axis of the breech block 7 so as to align with the fixed firing pin when in the firing position. The firing pin 23 is carried on a stepped back plate 20 detachably mounted on the rear of the body 1. The extreme rearward position of the breech block unit 2 is adjustable by nut 37 and spacing washer 38 so that when the unit 2 is in its rearmost position the firing pin indents the cartridge. A spring washer 35 urges the barrel and breech block unit 2 forwardly. The stock 4 of the pistol has a trigger 42 for retracting a spring loaded plunger 43 which acts as a safety device by restraining the unit 2 from moving towards the firing pin 23. In operation the bolt 17 is pushed inwardly so that the head 29 abuts the muzzle 6, the lever 42 is pulled and the head 29 is tapped against the animals head. On explosion of the cartridge two freely slidable resilient sleeves 33, 34 surrounding the bolt 17 act as surplus energy absorbers.
