Abstract
838,408. Ramming mechanism for guns. BOFORS A. B. May 27, 1958 [June 8, 1957], No. 16858/58. Class 92 A firearm has a rammer-lug 12 moved longitudinally of the axis of the bore by a spring loaded lever 1 pivoted outside the rammer's course at 2 and moving through a position in which it is perpendicular to the rammer's course. Fig. 1 shows the pre-ramming position in which lever 1 is held by a pawl 4 on a locking member 5 which turns on a shaft 6 and is retained by a pawl 8. The lever 1 has two arms, one on either side of the lug 12 which pivots on a shaft 10 whose ends extend through recesses 9 . at the ends of the arms of the lever into longitudinal slots 11 in either side of the rammer casing. Release of the pawl 4 permits a spring 3 to force lever 1 forward and cause the lug 12 to ram a cartridge 14. The lug engages the cartridge bore and is retained there owing to pressure of its rear end 15 on a flat surface 27 on the rammer casing. During recoil a guide (not shown) on the breech-ring depresses a roller 22 and operates a linkage 17-18-19-20- 21 to recock the lever 1 and spring 3, moving the lug 12 back on to a spring buffer 26. A buffer 16 brakes the lever 1 at the end of its forward movement, but if no cartridge is present, the construction of the lug is adequate to absorb the shock of hitting the casing.
