Abstract
778,034. Lining metallic tubes. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. Nov. 8, 1955, No. 31897/55. Class 99(2) A process for lining a metallic tube with thermoplastic material comprises the steps of inserting the thermoplastic material in the form of a tube within the metallic tube, forcing the plastic material against the internal surface of the metallic tube by a gaseous medium under pressure within the plastic tube, externally heating the metallic tube and plastic tube assembly with the plastic material forced against the internal surface and cooling the assembly. Such tubes can be used as high frequency electric wave guides. As an example the application of a thin tube of polyethylene 1 to the inner surface of a copper tube 2 is described. The internal surface of the copper tube is treated for example either by vapour degreasing in trichloroethylene followed by acid pickling and a thorough washing in water or by the electrodeposition of a flash coating of cadmium or by the formation of a controlled oxide film. The tube is then dried for 2-3 hours at 110-115‹C. with the inside at a reduced pressure of less than 1 mm. of mercury. The inside of the polyethylene tube and the space between this tube and the copper tube are evacuated to less than 1 mm. of mercury. A dry compressed gas such as nitrogen or air is then applied to the inside of the polyethylene tube. For a polyethylene tube with a wall thickness of 0.0127 cms. the pressure is gradually increased to 0.3515 kgms/sq. cm. The vacuum pump is then disconnected from the tube 11 which is closed by a plug having one end flush with the internal surface of the copper tube. The pressure is then increased to 1.406 kgms./ sq. cm. The heating process is then carried out in a thermostatically controlled air circulating oven and. the pressure of the nitrogen is maintained throughout the heating and cooling. The assembly is placed in a cold oven and the temperature slowly increased to about 130‹C. after 1¢ hours. This temperature is maintained for approximately ¢ hr., after which time the heat is switched off and the assembly allowed to cool. The initial dia. of the polyethylene tube is 5 to 15 per cent less than the internal dia. of the copper tube and the wall thickness of the polyethylene tube is substantially within the range 0.00254 cms. to 0.0254 cms.
