Abstract

To avoid localised overheating, waer is sublimed from deep-frozen material by high frequency radiation to increase temp. to just below 0 degrees C, at is approx. 10-1 Torr, low enough for mean free path to be comparable with sepn. between material and condenser so that molecular distn. is possible, but high enough to prevent ionization of gas causing voltage breakdown. Pref. press. is reduced to 10-3 Torr and increased to 10-1 Torr by introduction of inert gas e.g. N2. Radiation may be fed through wave guide to expanded metal enclosure around evacuated vessel, from which water vapour passes through a metal grille shielding the condenser. Radiation generator may be under prod. temp. control.
