Abstract
777,029. Opening bags. BARRACLOUGH, Ltd., R. W. and BARRACLOUGH, R. W. May 27, 1955 [May 24, 1954], No. 38317/56. Divided out of 775,100 [Group XVI]. Class 94(1). In a machine in which bags are conveyed to opening, filling and closing stations by holders arranged around the periphery of an intermittently rotatable table 10, the bag-opening mechanism comprises a pair of jaws 60 and 61 carried by slides 62 and 63 which are reciprocated in adjustable guides through linkage 54, 56, 57, operated by a cam-actuated rod 51. The jaw 60 is formed with a recess 82 communicating with a nipple 86 and the jaw 61 with a recess 83 communicating with nipples 87 and 89, the nipples 86, 87 being connected by valvecontrolled tubes (not shown) to a source of suction and the nipple 89 to a source of pressure air. A bag to be opened is moved between the jaws by its holder and positioned with its upper edge between the axes of the nipples. The rod 51 is then moved downwardly to cause the jaws to close and suction is applied to. the nipples 86, 87 to draw the walls of the bag into the recesses, thus providing a passage into the interior of the bag through which pressure air from the nipple 89 is admitted to inflate the bag. The supplies of pressure air and suction are then cut off and the rod 51 is finally moved upwardly to cause the jaws to open and release the bag so that it may be conveyed to the filling station. According to the Provisional Specification, the edges of the bag may be separated at the filling station by flaps forming an extension of a filling- nozzle which is lowered towards the bag. Specification 694,720 is referred to.
