Abstract

776,843. Window operating apparatus. HOPE & SONS, Ltd., H. Jan. 27, 1956 [Feb. 4, 1955], No. 3314/55. Class 20(3) Actuating mechanism for roof lights comprising one, or more, inclined windows 3, each pivoted at its lower edge and movable outwardly to an open position by gravity, comprises cables 4 each of which is connected adjacent the top of a window and passes over a guide pulley 5 for connection to one end of a main cable 6, 7 which passes round pulleys 9 and is connected to a screw-actuated operating mechanism 10, the parts 6, 7 of the main cable being connected by a fusible link 8. In order to prevent damage, due to the window falling freely when the link 8 fuses, a check cable 12, connected at one end to the part 6 of the main cable, passes over one of the guide pulleys 9, and is connected at' its other end to the piston 13 of a dashpot. The cylinder 14 of the dashpot is filled with a liquid, e.g. oil, the piston 13 being provided with a valve 15 which allows free flow of fluid through the piston as it moves downward but only permits a restricted flow when the piston moves upwards. Sufficient slack is left in the check cable 12 so that the piston 13 is only actuated after a predetermined opening movement of a window. The screw-actuating mechanism may include a quick release mechanism 11. Specification 698,211 is referred to. -
