Abstract
776,782. Sound receiving or transmitting devices. GOODMANS INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Jan. 10, 1955 [Jan. 11, 1954], No. 782/54. Class 40 (4). In a ribbon-type transducer, the air gap 5 which is annular or a sector of an annulus, has the field normal to the plane of the annulus and the ribbon 7 is supported at spaced points around the gap on a series of rods or pins 11 with its width in the direction of the field so that it forms a multiplicity of contiguous straight sections following substantially the curvature of the gap, each section being capable of oscillating in a direction normal to its plane. Pole-pieces 1, 2 which each comprise a semi-circular endplate 1b, 2b, having a flange la, 2a are secured to a magnet 3 so that the edges of the flanges la, 2a define the gap. The rear of the unit is closed by a panel 6 of insulating material to which the ends of the ribbon are clamped. The ribbon may be supported alternatively on a rigid arcuate strip mounted within the gap, the strip having an outer surface consisting of a series of concave faces over which the ribbon is drawn or a series of projecting ribs, for the same purpose. A curved horn 12 may be attached to the pole-pieces.
