Abstract

1,065,112. Moving coil instruments. M. STOLOW. June 24, 1964 [June 26, 1963], No. 26203/64. Heading H4J. In a moving coil transducer, for example a loud-speaker, the coil is attached to a flat support sheet which is attached, directly or indirectly, to a planar membrane supported at its edges in a frame. The support sheet is at right-angles to the membrane. The transducer comprises a substantially rectangular membrane (11), see Figs. 1, 2 (not shown), supported at its edges in a frame 12 wherein it is held by felt or rubber strips 13. The support sheet 15 (Fig. 4, not shown) is oblong and is glued into a slit provided in the centre of the membrane 11. A rectangular, flat voice coil 16 is glued to sheet 15. Sheet 15 is maintained perpendicular to the membrane 11 by a strip 18, slightly wider than the sheet 15, attached at its two ends to the frame 12 by rubber strips 19. Instead of the strip 18, a spider may be used. The magnet system comprises two permanent magnets 22, 23 secured to the frame 12 by screws 20. Each magnet 22, 23 has a pair of polepieces 24, 25 or 26, 27 arranged so that confronting faces 24, 26 are of opposite polarity, as are faces 25, 27. The sheet 15 may be attached to the membrane 11 by a pin (32), Fig. 5 (not shown). The coil may be elliptical or circular, Fig. 6 (not shown), the polepieces being of Corresponding shape. The sheet 15 may have positioned on it a rectangular or elliptical member of Presspahn, cardboard or plastics, the coil 16 being wound around and in the plane of the member. Alternatively there may be used a coil printed on one or both sides of a single flat sheet, or a plurality of such sheets with a coil on each of these, the coils being connected in parallel. The membrane 11 may be a single or double layer of veneer. A single-layer veneer has the sheet 15 attached across the grain. Alternatively the membrane 11 is of cardboard or plastics, e.g. foamed polystyrene. Holes (14) may be provided in the membrane 11 and a layer 11<SP>1</SP> of paper or plastics sheet glued to the membrane surface.
