Abstract

Class 99(1) In a pipe line consisting of at least two multi-layer tubes 1, Fig. 1, joined by a union, wherein the adjacent ends of the tubes overlap, at least two annular springs 3 tapered to slide over one another are located in a space between the overlapping portions of the tubes and are urged together by clamping means, such as a nut 4, externally threaded on a collar 8. In a modification, a set of springs 3, 3<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 2, is interposed between each tube end and the corresponding end of a sleeve 7, a nut 4 being threaded into each end of the sleeve; rubber packing rings 5 are provided as shown. The springs nearest the joint may be made of steel resistant to the medium conveyed by the tubes. In another modification, the ends of the inner layers diverge and contact a substantially correspondingly-shaped thrust-ring 10, Fig. 3, and in this region the outer layers. are replaced by similarly formed compression rings 11. The springs 3 are each enclosed by a sleeve 7<SP>1</SP> or 7<SP>11</SP> and urged together by bolts 13 acting on and distributed peripherally around thrust collars 12 and engaging threaded bores in the sleeves; threaded pins 14 extend through the bolts and hold the sleeves together. In a final embodiment, a split retaining-ring is associated with each thrust collar to prevent inadvertent separation of one or both tubes from the union. Examples are given of the materials from which the springs may be made.
